At the age of 22, Ali MacGraw relocated to New York and secured her first position at Harper’s Bazaar as an assistant editor, assisting photographers.

This was the beginning of a somewhat bleak period in MacGraw’s life. She ceased using drugs after getting drunk and high on the set of the 1978 movie Convoy.
Getting out of show industry
At the same time, a number of her films, including Just Tell Me What You Want (1980) and Players (1970), were box office failures.
In reference to going back into show business in the late 1970s, MacGraw told The Guardian, “It’s brutal for women.”

For a brief period, MacGraw was a Hollywood star. She didn’t completely give up on her show business career, but instead chose to pursue a career in interior design. McGraw claims that rather than viewing her as a former Hollywood celebrity, her neighbors value the community service she has been providing.
