Mariska Hargitay has spoken openly about her experience adopting her daughter, Amaya Josephine. In interviews, she disclosed that the adoption process was profoundly emotional and transformative. Following the birth of August, Mariska and her husband, Peter Hermann, began considering adopting additional children. They traveled to Haiti, where they found Amaya.

Mariska claimed that meeting Amaya for the first time transformed her life. She recalls feeling a close and immediate connection to her daughter.
