President Donald Trump’s long-standing ambition to buy Greenland has gained new momentum after legislation was introduced in Congress to open negotiations for acquiring the massive Arctic territory.

Since reclaiming the presidency on January 20, the Trump administration’s expansionist agenda has been on full display. In less than a month, Trump has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America”, unveiled plans to reclaim the Panama Canal, urged Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, and even suggested “taking over” Gaza and displacing all Palestinians. Now, his sights are once again set on Greenland, a dream that previously sparked diplomatic tensions with Denmark.

The renewed push for acquisition comes from Republican Congressman Buddy Carter of Georgia, who introduced a bill last week that would authorize President Trump to enter negotiations with Greenland and Denmark about the possibility of the U.S. purchasing the autonomous territory. The bill, which has been referred to committee, even includes a provision to rename Greenland “Red, White, and Blueland”.

Carter justified the move in a statement, declaring, “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland.” He went on to praise Trump’s vision, stating, “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”

The idea of acquiring Greenland is not new for Trump. During his first term, he caused a diplomatic stir when he proposed purchasing the territory, leading to a tense exchange with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who dismissed the idea as “absurd”. The response reportedly sent officials in Washington into crisis mode. Greenland, which was colonized by Denmark in the 18th century, was considered a colony until 1953, when it was redefined as a district of Denmark. Today, it remains an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty.

Despite the clear historical ties to Denmark, Trump remains adamant that Greenland would be better off under U.S. rule. Speaking to reporters last month, he doubled down on his belief that the 57,000 residents of Greenland “want to be with us”, claiming that “Denmark doesn’t really have a legitimate claim” to the world’s largest island.

“I think we’re going to have it. I think the people want to be with us,” Trump asserted. “I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world.”

He continued, “I think Greenland we’ll get because it has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we’re the one that can provide the freedom. They can’t.”

Adding to the intrigue, reports surfaced that an aircraft allegedly carrying Donald Trump Jr. landed in Nuuk, Greenland, on January 7—just weeks after his father publicly suggested that Washington should annex the island.

While the proposal is expected to face significant resistance from both Danish and Greenlandic officials, the Trump administration appears determined to push forward. Whether this effort gains serious traction or remains another grandiose attempt at reshaping the geopolitical landscape remains to be seen. But if history has proven anything, it’s that when Trump sets his sights on something, he rarely lets go.
